Dear Members of Congress,
I am writing to draw your urgent attention to the escalating political turmoil in Pakistan, which has led to severe human rights violations, including enforced disappearances and the increasing fascism against former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). These alarming developments necessitate immediate action to ensure that Pakistan upholds its international human rights obligations.
Since Imran Khan's ouster, Pakistan has experienced a disturbing trend of arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, and violent suppression of political dissent. The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention recently adopted Opinion 22/2024, which found the deprivation of liberty of Imran Ahmad Khan Niazi to be an arbitrary arrest. The UN has called for his immediate release, citing severe human rights violations and the conditions of his detention, which pose significant threats to his life and well-being.
Moreover, the US House of Representatives has passed House Resolution 901, emphasizing the urgent need for Pakistan to uphold democratic institutions, human rights, and the rule of law. The resolution urges Pakistan to respect fundamental guarantees of due process, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, and freedom of speech for the people of Pakistan. It condemns attempts to suppress democratic participation through harassment, intimidation, arbitrary detention, or violations of human, civil, or political rights. The resolution further supports free and fair elections in Pakistan, noting that the most recent election was not conducted under conditions that credible observers considered free or fair.
In addition to these concerns, the use of military trials against civilians is deeply troubling. Individuals such as Hassan Niaz, Haider Majeed, Abaad Farooq, Mehmood Rashid's son-in-law, and Usman Rajpoor's brother from Pindi are facing trials that lack transparency and fairness, violating their fundamental rights and undermining the rule of law in Pakistan. There have also been enforced disappearances involving individuals such as Azhar Mashwani’s brothers, Shahbaz Gill’s brothers, Ahmad Janjua (International Media Coordinator), Rizwan, and Farid Malik.
Furthermore, reports have emerged of judges being harassed and their family members abducted to pressure them into delivering verdicts against Imran Khan, ensuring his continued imprisonment. This blatant violation of judicial independence and the rule of law is unacceptable.
Additionally, women political figures associated with PTI, such as Dr. Yasmeen Rashid, Alia Hamza, and Bushra Bibi (Imran Khan's wife), have been rearrested under dubious circumstances, reflecting a disturbing trend of targeting women to suppress political opposition.
In light of these grave concerns, I urge the US Congress to take immediate action to:
1.	Demand the release of Imran Khan and all political prisoners without delay.
2.	Call for an end to enforced disappearances and arbitrary arrests.
3.	Urge Pakistan to adhere to international human rights standards and its obligations under the GSP+.
4.	Advocate for the cessation of military trials for civilians and ensure fair and transparent legal proceedings.
5.	Press for the end of harassment and intimidation of the judiciary, ensuring the independence of the judicial system.
6.	Stop the rearrest and targeting of women political figures.
Furthermore, we request the release of the EU's election expert mission report on observations of Pakistan's February 2024 elections. Transparency and accountability are crucial in ensuring that the will of the people is accurately represented.
The situation in Pakistan is a direct threat to democratic principles and human rights. It is imperative that the international community, particularly the United States, takes a firm stand to ensure that Pakistan honors its commitments and protects the rights of its citizens.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I trust that the US Congress will take the necessary steps to address these serious violations and uphold the principles of democracy and human rights.
